Understanding Sexual Trauma

Understanding Sexual Trauma

Treating Sexual Trauma Stories such as Dr. Ford’s decades-old sexual trauma may be frozen in the mind and body. Traumatic experiences remain cocooned in the nervous system and are susceptible to the effects of brain chemistry. Imago therapists use core skills to be an empathetic, neutral listener. Trauma therapists employ these core skills AND an additional layer of resilience, patience, hopefulness, and strong boundaries. Trauma therapists gently hold space for their client’s emotional and embodied pain allowing the story to emerge organically. How Trauma Appears Trauma may obscure a client’s self-compassion resources. […]

A Heart-Centered Practice

According to the Eastern chakra system, when a person’s heart chakra (seat of love) is closed, it can’t hear, feel, or discern emotions.  As stated in ancient Eastern text, modern man/woman is ambivalent and confused due to a lack of knowledge.  Living without knowledge in a couple is like being hijacked by fear, dispensing energy towards the primitive instinct of self-preservation.  When this closure occurs, the body completely denies access to the frontal cortex, priming a survival pattern—all decisions made, or emotions expressed are rooted in fear and survival instinct. Mother-Daughter Conflict

Presumably, the most enduring relationship most women have is with their mothers. Researchers suggest that daughters form an attachment bond with their mothers during infancy and rarely discontinue their relationship irrespective of the bond. Working as a healthcare provider for geriatric clients, specifically aging mothers, I often notice mothers request their daughter over their sons for emotional support. Research conducted on mother-daughter dyads who were chronically subject to conflict revealed that despite experiencing negative emotion and resentment, daughters seldom end their relationship with their mothers.
