Iyengar Yoga with Anna Rain
2019 Winter Series
Iyengar yoga is characterized by dynamic, precise instruction and careful attention to the individual needs of each student. The practice of asana (poses) teaches control of the body. That control allows us to achieve greater sensitivity, awareness, and focus within ourselves, which we then use in further study of yoga (control of the breath; concentration; meditation).
Introductory Series (Intro/Level 1)
12 weeks Mondays Jan. 7th – Mar. 25th at 6:15 PM – 7:45 PM
NOTE: The first 4 weeks will be an Introductory class with Level 1 beginning on Feb. 4th. Continuing students are welcome to the Introductory class.
For students new to yoga and new to the Iyengar method. I introduce vocabulary — both verbal and physical—to equip the student for attendance in any Level I class. We also use props so that each student receives optimal benefit of every pose, regardless of flexibility or experience. No student is too small, too big, too old, or too stiff to benefit.
12 weeks Mondays Jan. 7th – Mar. 25th at 4:30PM – 6:00 PM
12 weeks Tuesdays Jan. 8th – Mar. 26th at 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
12 weeks Thursdays Jan. 3rd – Mar. 28th at 6:15 PM – 7:45 PM
Explores the basic categories of poses: standing poses; forward extensions; backward extensions; twists; inversions; restorative poses. A student can benefit from attending a Level I session a number of times; mastery of asana requires study for many years. I teach students to understand their individual physical challenges and adapt poses for themselves accordingly.
12 weeks Thursdays Jan. 3rd – Mar. 28th at 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Intended for students who have extensive Iyengar experience and a dedicated home practice. More challenging poses are explored in depth, and students are expected to be able to care for their own physical condition within the context of practicing advanced poses.
60+ and Friends
12 weeks Thursdays Jan. 3rd – Mar. 28th at 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Open to all students who appreciate more deliberate guidance in their understanding of the poses. New students are welcome at any time in this class.
One on One Private Sessions
Uses principles of posture, breath, and relaxation with individual attention to your specific condition, often in ways not addressed in a group class or by traditional medical avenues. The practice—which often involves props—seeks to ease pain, explore flexibility, and deepen awareness and sensitivity in the connection of body and mind. Yoga therapy can benefit anyone, particularly those who are ill, pregnant, infirm, or elderly. By Appointment.
Classes will develop focus, sensitivity, and attention to the physical and emotional body.
Wear shorts or leggings and a comfortable, form-fitting shirt. Sweatpants and loose yoga pants are discouraged; they obscure alignment. You may want to bring a warmer layer to wear at the beginning and end of class. A bathroom is available for changing. Feet must be bare. Come with an empty stomach. Please don’t wear perfume or heavy jewelry. I have all props you need in the room, but you are welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer.
Plan to arrive ten minutes before class begins. This allows time for you to get your props and to check in with me if you have any special needs. Your prompt arrival helps you and the other students center and assures safe transition into class. If you do arrive late, please enter after the settling into class is completely finished. Cell phones SILENT, please; if you need otherwise, please tell me.
Before class, let me know if your physical condition has changed since the last class. Women, please tell me if you are menstruating. Certain poses should be avoided or modified at that time.
If I must cancel class, I will have a make-up class or credit you a class. If you miss your regular class, you may make up during any other class. Preemptive make-ups are fine. All make-up classes must happen before the last class of the series (Thursday, March 28). If you know you will not be attending class, your emailing me is appreciated but not necessary.
4-week intro series for new students—$52. 12 week session—$180; paid in advance buys 13 classes. All others pay what you can: $16-18 per class suggested. Payment is accepted in cash or check made out to Anna Rain. This session ends Thursday, March 28. No credit will be carried over to the next session. Please see me if you need assistance paying for classes.
